    You ask how I do the shading, well, it's a lot to do with materials. I use bristol board (a very smooth cartridge paper), a mechanical pencil (2B lead, size .7), a putty rubber (very soft, so you can make it into a point and remove fine detail) and stumps/torchons (these are used to smooth the graphite).
    Lots of pencil artists use loads of different pencils/leads, but I've only ever used one.
    Couple of tips - find a good photo with LOTS of contrast and remember there is shading all over the face - the skin is not white anywhere (unless they're dead) not even the whites of the eyes are truly white. :eyepopping:
